If you are looking for a family photographer in Playa del Carmen, this session with the Sawyer family is exactly the kind of day I love to photograph. We spent golden hour at a private oceanfront village on the Riviera Maya, with glass-railed terraces, a turquoise infinity pool, a thatched palapa and a quiet stretch of Caribbean beach all within a few steps of each other.
Nothing about this session was stiff or staged. The kids ran, the baby of the family wandered off to inspect everything, dad lifted his little guy into the air, and the family's Rhodesian Ridgeback decided he was part of the shoot (he was, and he stole several frames). Those are the moments parents tell me they treasure most.

Why a Private Villa Is Perfect for a Family Photoshoot in Playa del Carmen
Beaches are beautiful, but they can also be crowded, windy and hard on little ones. A private villa or village changes everything:
• Privacy. No strangers walking through your frame, so kids relax and act like themselves.
• Variety in one place. Terrace, pool, palapa, staircase and beach, all without driving anywhere.
• Toddler-friendly comfort. Shade, snacks, bathrooms and a place to rest are always nearby.
• Flexible timing. We can follow the light and the kids' energy instead of a strict schedule.
For families on vacation, it also means less stress. You stay at your villa, we come to you, and the photos happen naturally around your day.
Golden Hour on the Terrace and Infinity Pool
The terrace was the star of the evening. White walls, warm wood decking and clear glass railings framed the Caribbean in every direction, and the late light turned the whole space soft and golden.
The Sawyers dressed in coral, white and light blue, a palette that looked effortless against the turquoise water. It is a great example of coordinating without matching: everyone looks like they belong together, and nobody looks like a catalog.
By the infinity pool, the family sat together at the edge while the sea stretched out behind them. Their daughter wandered between mom and dad, their little boy gave the camera his most serious look, and everyone looked like themselves. The long afternoon shadows against the white walls gave us graphic, playful portraits of the kids too, from a toddler leaning against a sunlit wall to a little girl swinging in a woven hammock chair with the ocean behind her.
Candid Moments Inside the Villa

Some of my favorite images from this session happened indoors. A glass-and-wood staircase made a beautiful frame as mom and her son came down hand in hand while the dog watched from below. Upstairs, the kids danced around mom in a bright, airy hallway full of reflections. On the terrace lounge, mom gave the dog a pat while dad grinned from the doorway.
These in-between moments are the heart of lifestyle family photography. Sippy cups, a quick rest on an oversized cushion, brother and sister drinking water in front of a colorful painting: this is what your days actually look like, and it is what you will want to remember in ten years.
Beach Play Under the Palms

When the light softened, we walked down to the sand. Mom and dad swung the kids between them under a canopy of palm trees, with the Caribbean glowing behind them. The laughter in these frames is completely real. The dog wandered into the foreground at just the right moment and gave us one of the most memorable compositions of the day.
Under the thatched palapa, dad and mom lifted their little boy high into the air against a wide, open sky. It is a simple moment, and the kind of photo families end up framing.
A Moment for Mom and Dad

Every family session leaves a few minutes for the parents. Out on the ocean-view deck, with the Ridgeback standing proudly beside them, the couple shared a quiet embrace. A glass panel doubled the scene in a perfect reflection, and two pelicans glided across the blue sky overhead. These are the images that remind you why you started this family in the first place.

Tips for Planning Your Family Photoshoot in Playa del Carmen
• Time of day. Start about 90 minutes before sunset for soft, warm light and cooler temperatures.
• What to wear. Choose a coordinated palette instead of identical outfits. Soft coral, white and light blue looked beautiful here. Avoid heavy logos and neon colors.
• Photographing toddlers. Go at their pace. Bring snacks and a favorite cup, and let them explore. The best photos usually happen when nobody is told to smile.
• Include your pets. Dogs are family too. A short walk or a treat can get them comfortable in front of the camera.
• Choose the right location. Private villas, beaches and resorts around Playa del Carmen all work well. Ask your photographer about permits and access before the day.
• Prepare for the heat. Hydrate, apply sunscreen early and plan a cool-down break.
